Don’t be fooled by the hype.
Especially our own.
While the Tour Honchos like to believe they have covered the whole of Doctor Who, both ‘Nu’ and ‘Classic’ and has left no turn un-stoned, the sad truth is that there are gaps, not for any lack of trying mind you, but gaps all the same.
As the Tour has filled out galleries for Companions, the thought wasn’t necessarily to be comprehensive. but to hit the most well-known companions, like Elizabeth Sladen, first and slowly, very, very, slowly, build out from there. We could’ve sworn this had been covered some time ago but then just before a slight hibernation on our part we were pointed to a rather sizable hole in our repertoire, and no it isn’t Adrienne Hill (for fans of the rather inexplicable ‘companion’ whose entire run only spanned part of The Daleks Master Plan but, for as long as we’ve been fans has always been considered as such).
No, it was Adric.
Matthew Waterhouse holds the distinction, alongside Adrienne Hill as it happens, of being the only companions to die during the classic era of the series. That they perished is no reason to not cobble something together for Waterhouse. Just a curiosity.
Which has now been rectified, although with a smaller gallery than we had imagined. Images of Waterhouse outisde of convention appearances, which we tend to shy away from, are relatively rare in this day and age. But that’s no excuse.
We’ve grouped, for entirely esoteric reasons, the Waterhouse warehouse of images under the Tom Baker wing of the Tour, although in memory he seemed to be a better match for Peter Davison all in all. He certainly straddled the eras quite cleanly.
Now we know that he was right, of course.
