The Sound of Drums

Until Matt Smith took over in 2010, he was the new kid on the block. Beginning with The Christmas Invasion David Tennant was the 10th Doctor. Or was he? As viewers found out in The Time of the Doctor that John Hurt’s ‘War Doctor’ was in fact the actual 9th Doctor making Christopher Eccleston the 10th and Tennant the 11th. But was he… also the 12th?

At the end of The Stolen Earth the Doctor is shot and begins to regenerate but uses the energy to heal himself and redirects the rest to ‘the hand,’ which he lost all the way back in The Christmas Invasion. But in The Time of the Doctor viewers were told that despite “vanity issues” this was a countable regeneration. In theory this means from Journey’s End onwards he was also the 12th Doctor. However, for the purposes of this page all of the Tennant stories are listed.

2023 will provide even further complication as he returns in three Anniversary specials.  Will he be the ’10th’ Doctor or something else entirely?
