Can you go to The Well once too often (?) will be the refrain oft used when discussing The Well. and we here at The Tour will not disappoint in this regard, but the particular metaphorical well we are more interested in the ‘Base-Under-Siege’ story which Doctor Who in general and RTD in specific have honed to a fine polish over many years. Goodness knows we’ve written about it here enough.
That The Well was a stealth sequel to Midnight can, could, and did please the Tour brain trust. A story in 2025 as a follow-on to a 2008 story would, in a tortured sort of way, be a 1988 sequel to The Dæmons from 1971. (Upon further reflection, JN-T can and did do some of this when he brought back the Sea Devils in 1984 in Warriors of the Deep 12 years after 1972’s The Sea Devils and planned to have the Celestial Toymaker return in 1986 after 21 years away–but those weren’t sequels that The Well was)
So we can’t quite escape the feeling that RTD is either ‘playing the hits’ or simply, and we add expertly, executing on something he can do very well indeed. Certainly what made Midnight work, over and above the excellent on-screen performances, was that the audience never saw the monster. The Well knows this, but does offer some very brief glimpses, just enough to tantalize.
That’s good enough for us. Images and caps for The Well are now online.
